A Short Break

The past few weeks have been fun, stressful and exhausting. The little amount of sleep and stress finally got to me this past weekend and that is why you haven’t heard from me on here or even on FB and Twitter for a few days. I still don’t even feel like I have recovered now but work has calmed down some so life is somewhat better.

I still have electricity if that is what everyone is assuming is one of the issues since it is all over the news how many people are still without it. I did loose electricity on Friday, however it was only for four hours, I was one of the lucky ones I guess. I did however have some flooding in my basement on Sunday night which caused some water damage to a few things that were stored down there but nothing I was really upset about. It was just stressful trying to save a few things.

Now on to the bigger issue at hand. On Sunday morning I went out for my 13 mile run and only made it about 1.5 miles before I was having quite a bit of pain in my right hip that I could not stretch out and didn’t seem like it would get better if I pushed on. I decided to call it quits there and just swim later in the day at the gym. I didn’t really feel any pain when I was walking just when I was running and occasionally when I was sitting. I iced my hip on Sunday and took some ibuprofen but still decided to take off Monday just to give it some more time to hopefully heal. I was still feeling some discomfort on Tuesday morning so I decided to try cycling instead which went very well however it still didn’t overly feel like it was healing. Since I have two big races in the fall (Air Force Marathon and Dresden (Germany) Marathon) I called my doctor’s office shortly after they opened because I wanted to hopefully figure this out quickly so it would heal quickly.  They ended up having a cancellation yesterday so they were able to fit me in which was wonderful. I discussed a few different symptoms I have had over the past few weeks to my doctor and he diagnosed me with trochanteric bursitis. Basically one of the sacs that protects my muscles, tendons, etc from being damaged by my hip joint is inflamed probably due to either my change in workout or change in my stride/cadence due to my numbness in my left leg. He gave me a shot of steroids right into my hip and told me to rest for three days which is a little rough to take but hopefully this will help and I will be back training this weekend.  I hope!

OWS

I just had to become friends with some triathletes….couldn’t just stay with the runners on the other side of the playground. See, when you become friends with triathletes they convince you to go cycling, go do laps in the pool and go out for open water swims. Yes, that is correct. Open water swims. Have you ever been at the beach and see a group of swimmers with bright swim caps and they are actually swimming out by the buoys. Yes, that was me last night. Decided to go out for my first open water swim (OWS) last night after I did about 4.5 miles of hill work in the morning and walked about 3 miles throughout the day. Wasn’t my brightest moment but ended up not going too bad.

The first 200-300 meters were a little rough until my teammates from STAR (Springfield Triathletes and Area Racers) suggested I just try going in closer to the beach where I could touch and rest for a little bit. After that it seemed like I got a second wind and was on my way. (I did actually say I was just going to turn around at this point but got the competitiveness in me when they mentioned that I at least made it further than a lot of first timers, I wanted to do better than the typical first timer) I did struggle occasionally with my spotting (or direction) because my goggles kept fogging. It’s a little hard to know where you are going when you can’t see anything in the water so you have to use landmarks to help keep you going in the right direction. I guess I did zig zag a little but ended up getting in almost 1000 meters.

I think overall my first OWS went pretty well with guidance and little humor from my teammates. Think almost half the time was spent talking even when we were in the water. Definitely plan on going every available Wednesday night to our STAR OWS. Have my first sprint triathlon to train for in August. 🙂

Swimming Pool 3, Me 0

Ok, so I think I mentioned before that I started up the swimming classes again. I really find them helpful and keep me practicing my swimming. I am currently in the middle of week three of classes and have noticed that I am little more clumsy this time.

First week did great during the first class, felt like I didn’t even take off the few months from the last set of classes. During the second class I pulled a muscle on the bottom of my left foot while I was pushing off the wall. Wasn’t anything terrible but I wasn’t able to do a few things during the rest of class.

Second week we did a lot of back stroke work. During one exercise I was trying to go fast and ran my head into the wall. Didn’t learn from this and shortly after hit my forearm on the edge of the pool. So I might have been trying to go to quickly and not slowing down when I should have.

This week I actually have bruising and pain that didn’t go away a hour or so after class. Last night we were working on IMs (all four strokes) and I was determined to try to do the Fly for the entire length of the pool. (Before I would have the rhythm down but lose it about half way) I started really good and seemed to be keeping the rhythm this time. When i had about a third of the lap done the women in front of me were coming back down the left side doing the back stroke. I didn’t want to hit them so I was “hugging” the rope more and smacked my hand into the plastic about three or four times.

Needless to say it didn’t feel very good. I did better the next few times doing the fly but ended up hitting the rope a few more times. Then later I also noticed bruising on my wrist. Don’t remember when I did that but it showed up around the same time.

So lesson learned…try to avoid rope/plastic lane dividers as much as possible. I had hit them before but never had it hurt more than a few minutes. Hoping I won’t be so accident prone for my remaining seven classes! Off to ice and take more ibuprofen!.

PS – Yes, I have always been the girl who is proud of her interesting bruises, scrapes and scars. Always had to show off my soccer ball imprints on my legs, my bruised sprained ankles, and large scrapes from slide tackling during the soccer season. Drove my mom nuts. 🙂

What did I just spend my last Friday night in 2011 doing? Looking online at all of the websites for the major races I hope to do this year and write out the deadlines and costs for each race. Do you think four marathons would be too much? 🙂

Yes, I know I am crazy. Especially since I just remembered as I write this that I plan to do a few triathlons this year as well! I am not planning on attempting an Ironman or anything, just maybe some sprint triathlons. Sprint triathlons typically are a 1/4 to 1/2 mile swim, 12.4 mile bike and 3.1 mile run. Guess I just need to hope this is a mild winter so I can do a lot of training outside! (And hope it will be an injury free year too!)

My training for the past few weeks has not gone as well as I had hoped. I definitely have had some good days however not on my long distance days which is what I really needed. I still haven’t ran over 7 miles at one time since I was injured but I think I am going to still at least attempt the half marathon on Sunday. I am pretty sure I can finish it, just fear my time will be worse than my first half marathon. Plus about six of us from my work are running in the half marathon (we even have matching shirts) but I am the only woman so I feel like I have to represent.  I need to give these guys a run for their money!

Sometimes it is hard to switch to the “just be happy you finished” mentality rather than the more competitive “I want to beat my PR” or “I want to beat him/her” mentality. Who knows maybe I will be ok…I only ran 18 miles before my first marathon and I stuck it out through over 8 more miles. So I have only ran 7 miles…what is 6 more?

Now on to triathlons…I had my first adult swim lesson tonight at my alma mater, Wittenberg University.  I swam on a swim team when I was a kid but thought this would be more helpful if I was going to really give this triathlon thing a go. I had a pretty good time but man my arms are sore. Wonder how I will feel tomorrow! I am seriously considering doing the Tiger Tri on the 22nd which will also be held at Wittenberg. It would be a ¼ mile swim, 16 mile bike and 3.2 mile run. I know I am crazy. If the half marathon kicks my butt then maybe I won’t do this but sounds like it might be an ok one for my first triathlon. We will see how I feel on Sunday or Monday. 🙂
